An excerpt from Pink Marble
None of us–me, my parents, Carrie nor Josh–could escape DeeDee’s constant presence. We heard her baby laughter in the halls, her tiny feet running up and down the stairs. In the middle of the night, she visited us, wanting to play. The only way to quiet her was to give in and do what she wanted, so we took turns keeping her entertained. The effort slowly ate away at us, leaving little energy for anything else.
I became afraid to sleep alone, afraid of the dark, afraid of DeeDee’s face staring at me from across the bed, though she was always smiling. I would wake and find her sitting on my coverlet with her stuffed animals and dolls, laughing, the front of her dress–the one Grandma had embroidered for her, that Mama still kept on her dresser–covered in fresh, red blood.
