An excerpt from Twisted in the Dark

Jed Mulgrew turned onto his side in the basement boiler room. He'd placed his cot behind a cooler for school lunches. Square plastic boxes, empty of milk cartons, were stacked in two high rows, to serve as his headboard. A little privacy from prying eyes. An empty bottle of whiskey fell from his limp hand. Muffled noises tried to tease him awake, and he fought to surface, but couldn't. He wrinkled his nose. Coughed. Then slipped into unconsciousness.

A lace curtain shifted. She watched until they'd extinguished the fire, found the body. She'd played fair, placed the bottle of whiskey at the school's back door. He didn't have to drink it. It was a test. She smiled. Just as she'd thought, he'd flunked it.

Judith Post taught elementary school before raising two daughters and turning her hand to murder. She’s had stories in Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine and Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine as well as three Womansleuth anthologies by Crossing Press.
